Design and Construction of Thames Barrier

The Thames Barrier is using rotating gates design to prevent the rising of water in Thames River. This design was advised by Charles Draper. The barrier construction was started in 1974 and it was fully operational in 1984. The Thames Barrier was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II, on 8 MAY 1984. The complete construction cost was £534 million. The barrier stretches across 520 meters of the river. It divides the river into four 61-meter and two 30-meter navigable spans. The working life of barrier is until 2070.
