The Thames Barrier is the world’s second largest water
barrier to stop the flood from entering into London. It is located on
downstream of Central London. Its main purpose is to protect the London from
being flooded by sea water, in case of any mishap.
Why Thames Barrier was constructed
In the history, two major floods came in the Thames River. In 1928, Thames flood, fourteen people were died and in 1953, due to North Sea Flood, 307 people were died. Because of these incidents, the need for a flood barrier was aroused.
Design and Construction of Thames Barrier
The Thames Barrier is using rotating gates design to prevent
the rising of water in Thames River. This design was advised by Charles Draper.
The barrier construction was started in 1974 and it was fully operational in
1984. The Thames Barrier was inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II, on 8 MAY 1984. The
complete construction cost was £534 million. The barrier stretches
across 520 meters of the river. It divides the river into four 61-meter and two
30-meter navigable spans. The working life of barrier is until 2070.
